Gypsophilia album preview show

“It really crystallizes everybody’s energy for writing, performing, thinking about it,” says Ross Burns, after a weekend of recording live off the floor with Gypsophilia at Charles Austin’s Echo Chamber. “There’s a bunch of new compositions and new insights on old stuff.” The band---Ross Burns, Sageev Oore, Matt Myer, Nick Wilkinson, Adam Fine, Alec Frith and Gina Burgess (Daniel Oore is away on hiatus)---are working on their second album, a follow up to 2007’s Minor Hope. Burns describes the new album as energetic, spontaneous and loose, more similar to the atmosphere of their live show. “At one point there’s some gang vocals that I think we might keep,” he says. The new record will be ready for release in June, but for fans eager to get an early first listen, Gypsophilia are putting on a sneak preview at the soon-to-be closed Hell’s Kitchen this Friday, November 28.“The band kind of started with us playing the music of Django Reinhardt, his tunes or old standards that he played,” Burns says, “I think we are now just a little bit more comfortable in our shoes, we can do our thing.” That includes klezmer, Brazilian music, reggae and jazz, tango and funk, and a lot of improvising, with each player bringing in different influences. “ sets people loose to do their thing, or show off what they got or take it to a new place,” Ross says. For Minor Hope, Wilkinson and Daniel Oore composed most of the songs, but for the new album, five of the seven players contributed songs. “We’re excited,” Burns says. “Some of this material is so new to us that we haven’t performed it yet. This show is a chance to actually play it live and see how people respond.” Chances are they will respond by dancing.
