The funky gypsy jazz group is on fire right now, and there's no sign of cooling. Nominated for two ECMAs, winner of a Music Nova Scotia award for Jazz Recording of the Year and currently recording music for Ryan MacGrath's upcoming album, Gypsophilia is ready to sit down at The Carleton and slow the pace for two nights of intimate performing. "We often end up playing dance parties or clubs with a more rock-ish energy," says guitarist Ross Burns just before heading to a rehearsal. "This'll be a chance to sit down and listen to all the details, do something quiet and have people notice." While ensuring trophy rotation for the band's MNS award stays fair ("It's been rotating from house to house, it's sort of a time-share agreement,"), Gypsophilia band members Burns, Alex Frith, Nick Wilkinson, Sageev Oore, Matt Myer, Adam Fine and Gina Burgess have been working on new pieces for an end-of-summer recording. Keep an ear open for the new songs at The Carleton shows. –Holly Gordon
