Do you work from home? Are office politics getting you down? Perhaps you are only in town for business and need a meeting space for the afternoon. The Hub might just be the answer for you. The Hub Halifax sells time, not space. Their flexible membership works like a cell phone plan (without the life-long contract), as you can drop in or for $15 a session or pay a monthly fee of $400 for unlimited Hub access. Fees include access to boardrooms, work areas, desks, lounges, a café-style kitchenette, wireless Internet, photo copiers, fax machines and computers.

The exact location of the Hub Halifax has yet to be officially released (somewhere on Gottigen Street), though founders Sera Thompson, Tracy Boyer Morris, Joanne Macrae and the most recently added hubber Rob MacArthur are diligently chipping away at the details. They're hoping to officially open the Hub in January 2009. In addition to the communal workspace, there is also talk of opening a larger café and hotel reminiscent of Toronto's uber chick The Drake and Gladstone Hotels adjacent to the Halifax Hub.

“We're looking for positive change,” says Macrae. “We want to nurture entrepreneurs without over extending their resources. We want to build a community where all types of professionals can gather within one space.”

The Halifax Hub was inspired by an emergence of global networks of similar structure situated throughout the world. Other successful locations include: London, Johannesburg, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Sao Paulo, Brussels and Bristol. If this sort of community-based working environment peaks your interest - let 'em know. Please check out the fine print section of the website and fill out their survey at www.thehubhalifax.ca
