Haywire kicks ass

Action movie delivers considerable chops in MMA fighter Gina Carano

The last time Steven Soderbergh coloured outside the lines with his casting of a female lead was in The Girlfriend Experience, when he unleashed the vacant stare of petite porn star Sasha Grey. Mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano is an entirely different specimen and produces much better results as the star of Haywire, playing a private-sector secret agent sold out by her boss and former lover (Ewan McGregor). Carano paves the path to retaliation with the blood of A-list actors, making up for her wobbly acting with her graceful physicality. This is a woman who’s entirely believable beating the shit out of men of various weight classes. Soderbergh, meanwhile, cements his status as one of the best visual storytellers in the movie business, constructing an economical, entertaining piece of pure cinema.
