Helen Hill retrospective

A lot of Haligonians tuned in to watch the CBC documentary After the Storm that aired on October 29. It was as much a lovely celebration of the late filmmaker Helen Hill, who was murdered in her New Orleans home, and Hill's beloved husband Paul Gailiunas, as it was an investigation into a city destroyed by years of neglect, poverty, crime and, of course, Hurricane Katrina.

The documentary featured a lot of personal footage and photos from the couple’s time living here in Halifax, including performances by Gailiunas’ old band Piggy, and recent interviews with friends Heather Harkins and Lukas Pearse.

On Monday, there's another type of tribute at CBC Radio Room (1599 South Park, 7pm, $8) with Helen Hill, A Retrospective, a night of Hill's hands-on animated films. Then on Saturday, November 29 at Eyelevel Gallery (Gottingen, 7pm), the Linda Joy Media Arts Society will announce the winner of this year's Helen Hill Animated Award. Most appropriately, Harkins, also a filmmaker, won the award last year.
