Here Comes the Boom

Not quite a KO, but not down for the count either

Ultimate fighting isn't the obvious choice to save a school's arts program, but Here Comes the Boom doesn't let its head (or fists) get in the way of its heart. A lunkheaded biology teacher at an underfunded elementary, star Kevin James struggles to find a way to raise $50,000 after budget cuts threaten the music program and its inspiring teacher (Henry Winkler). It just so happens a pupil at his night school classes teaches mixed martial arts, so James takes the crazy step of training for some painful (but lucrative) cage fights. A bit wobbly on its feet, the plot almost falls off the axis a couple of times with calamitously needless story points. But against the odds, the film's underlying story of human perseverance wins out. Here Comes the Boom is as scrappy and durable as its punching bag main character.
