Trio is a polished, serendipitous comfy couch Ry Cooder-appreciating blues ramble. Thom Swift is the strongest lyricist in the room, but three of his four compositions are instrumentals. The sadness of a girl’s life gone astray in Swift’s “Far Away From Home” is expressed in chops honed on those long New Brunswick nights. Bassist Tom Easley fashions contemplative tunes with somewhat pat rhymes. Joel LeBlanc has the most playful (“Mr. Spaceman”) and experimental (“Metallic Sunrise”) energy. The sense is that most of this was born from a phrase or two cultivated through improvisation and an appreciation of each other’s tricks.
