HRM travel budget

by

During budget deliberations at Tuesday's council meeting, several councillors suggested zeroing out the travel budget, which would bring about a savings of $928,000---$615,000 for out of town travel plus $313,000 for travel to "conferences and workshops"---for one year. That's travel for both council members and staff, but it was pointed out that travel for staff's "professional development" is allocated through another line item all together, meaning it's over and above these amounts.

To put this in context, the city's travel costs are roughly equivalent to the cost of all the much scrutinized travelling by Halifax 2104 reps in the aborted pursuit for the Commonwealth Games, which came in, by my count, to just a tad over a million dollars.

The motion to delete travel money from the HRM budget was defeated.
