I'm So Excited | Arts & Culture | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

Though it's premise hinges on a drug-fuelled orgy aboard a doomed airplane, the bubbly I'm So Excited remains surprisingly tame. Due to an error from an absent-minded ground chief (Antonio Banderas, in cameo), a Spain-to-Mexico flight is left circling Toledo, unable to land. The plane might smash apart upon touchdown, but luckily the all-gay flight attendants have lots of alcohol, mescaline and musical numbers ready. A potentially crashing plane, it turns out, is as good a time as any to have some sex and confront past transgressions. Pedro Almodovar keeps things breezy, turning up the colour and saturating the melodrama in impassioned hysterics straight from a soap opera. Things get a little rapey for a couple of minutes, souring some of the otherwise harmless, slutty fun. A comedy of character, I'm So Excited never moves too far along, but it's as tangy and light as the spiked-Valencia cocktails the passengers keep downing.
