Re: “So long, paycheque

I moved here last year from Vancouver to attend grad school. Vancouver has the most insane rents in the country. Anytime you go to look at an apartment, there's 10-12 other people milling about, waiting to see the place. A (shitty) bachelor is $750 minimum. And if you have pets, forget about it. Finding a place that takes cats took 5 months and you're guaranteed to pay double rent since you can't give your notice and magically find a new apartment within 4 weeks, unless you've got a ton of money (which I don't).

On the other hand, rent can only go up by 4% a year in BC. And tenancy boards seem to always side in the favour of tenants.

I was pretty shocked to move to Halifax and find the rents comparable to Vancouver. I managed to find a decent bachelor near school that was just this side of affordable...until a few months ago, when my previous landlord told me he'd be raising my rent by $100/month. That's a 16% increase, which is insane. No rent control in NS? Verbal agreements between tenants/landlords are meaningless? Yikes. A landlord must've crafted the laws here.

Re: “Reviewing reviewers

I imagine the reviewers for the Coast have day jobs and do their Coast-y stuff on the side. It's a free paper, for God's sake. Work an eight hour day at your 9-to-5er and then go see a play and write about it for next to nothing. Dream job, indeed.

Re: “Music or cycle, you choose

Just putting this out there: it's possible for someone to have headphones in their ears and have their MP3 player turned off/paused. I walk around with my earbuds in, but I always pause my iPod when crossing the street, and yet this didn't prevent an old woman from honking at me (she was at a red light, I had the little white stick figure's permission to cross the street) and telling me to "get those things out of (your) ears!"

Maybe focus less on supporting your argument with things you can't know for sure and use things you know for sure (he's a shitty bike rider, for one). The end.

Re: “Skanky stinky people

Weird how 100% humidity and 30 degree weather can make it difficult for people to control their sweating. You must be Win Hof. And you must smell like a daisy all the time.

Re: “Read and obey the sign

@no_fool: second-hand stores still have to pay rent, taxes, and employee salaries. It's not 100% profit, otherwise everyone would be getting into the second-hand store business. Most of what people donate is garbage which will never sell, thus the onus of getting rid of it is on the store owner rather than the person who just didn't want to deal with disposing their own trash. But, hey, you know the ins and outs of entrepreneurship so well, I guess you already know all this.
