J Mascis

Several Shades of Why (Sub Pop)

J Mascis, lead guitarist of Dinosaur Jr., sure knows how to shred a tasty solo. But even the most established guitar hero has a soft side. Sounding like the indie-rock version of Lenny Breau, Mascis trades in his Big Muff guitar pedals and Fender Jazzmaster for an acoustic axe on his new solo album. Lighter than previous solo efforts as J Mascis and the Fog, Several Shades brings out the folky side of Mascis and highlights his vocal and melodic chops. It may not be the distorted arpeggiated wails of classic Dinosaur, but after 30 years of wailing, where else can one go but here
