Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

Rated R (MPAA) 93 min. 2013

Jackass didn't dare to presume a half-cocked story would enrich the balls-deep collection of self-harming stunts its maniac cast performed, which is one of several factors working against Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa. The hidden camera comedy finds Johnny Knoxville under heavy makeup as the titular grandfather, tasked with ferrying his foul-mouthed descendant (Jackson Nicoll) across the country to the boy's deadbeat dad. The story scenes bookending Knoxville's pranks are impossibly useless, dredged in first draft cliches. Even worse, the actual just-for-laughs gags are pathetically tame. Knoxville makes inappropriate comments to young women, Nicoll curses—rinse and repeat for 60 minutes. Director Jeff Tremain's camera meanwhile captures the confused politeness of southern Americans who continually just try and be helpful to Knoxville's beleaguered octogenarian. An embarrassingly failed experiment, Bad Grandpa is a stillborn comedy which shamefully denigrates the Jackass name. —Jacob Boon
