If you ditch the riot element of Kathleen Hannas grrrl solo project, Julie Ruin, insert the alliteration and allurement of The Moldy Peaches, then add the carnivalesque connotations of Wax Mannequin, youd get a hodgepodge portrait of Jenny Omnichord. A sister project for The Barmitzvah Brothers Jenny Mitchell, the singer, bassist and resident omnichordist fell head over heels for the instrument after finding it at her fathers thrift store nearly a decade ago. She branches off from the family tree into even more queerly comical terrain based on the most omitted instrument in indie-pop music. At 22 years old, Mitchell has crafted the most artful of arty solo albums and everyones on it. Released on weewerk, the 13-track Cities of Gifts and Ghosts features Jon-Rae Fletcher, Final Fantasys Owen Pallett, Jim Guthrie, Evan Gordon, Bobby Wiseman and a remix by Eccodeck. Other highlights include an ode to bushy-tailed squirrels and an omni-flavoured lollipop version of The Guess Whos These Eyes. (SWC)
