The North Side Benches

Published October 09, 2003.Jim BrysonThe North Side Benches (Orange)He may look like a high school gym teacher, but Jim Bryson is a gifted songwriter. If he’d spent his youth holed up in his basement learning Replacement songs and drinking chamomile tea instead of batting a ball around it would not be a surprise. He has an uncanny ability to convey the obvious with an immediacy and warmth fans of Paul Westerberg and Joe Henry will understand. The North Side Benches is slicker and quieter than The Occasionals, but it is thoroughly engaging, if not addictive. —Dave Hayden
