Jim Lauderdale & the Dream Players
Renowned Nashville tunesmith Lauderdale sings 10 new numbers, backed by veterans of Elvis Presley’s and Bruce Springsteen’s bands and the likes of Emmylou Harris and Buddy Miller singing harmonies. With a background in bluegrass, Lauderdale keeps the arrangements simple and the themes uplifting. “I Hope You’re Happy” is boisterously encouraging and the catchiest. “Hittin’ It Hard” could be sung at an intervention. His prescription is terse: “You can’t run that far from yourself.” A few songs, such as “Molly’s Got a Chain,” invite interpretation. Honey Songs is more sweet if you prefer craft over sensation.
