Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band
New psych-folk tends to humble its fans like a grateful church mass. Newsom, one of its strongest figureheads, has, after the great success of November’s Ys, handed out another bit for us to chew on. The EP has new versions of “Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie” and “Cosmia,” and one new song, “Colleen.” “Colleen” and “Cosmia” are both in the mode of Ys album—like myths told through song they are textured, long, have beginnings, middles, ends and convey mood well enough to make you happy, scared and feeling weird after one listen. “Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie” throws back to her earlier style, and is only normal in comparison.
