Johnny Cash

American VI: Ain’t No Grave (American)

by

The American Recordings series of Rubin-Cash collaborations has been exceptional---this latest, supposedly last, is no different. It is exquisite. It is heart wrenching. And it would be unbearable at times, if not so beautiful and lovingly tender. Even if you didn't know Cash died shortly after this recording, it's impossible not to after discovering the tracks he covers and witnessing his last penned composition ("I Corinthians 15:55") in which he sings, "O Death where is thy sting?/O Grief where is thy victory" with tremendous grace and peacefulness. A masterful final statement if there ever was one.
