The sweet-voiced, 24-year-old Musgraves has caused a lot of Stetson-clutching down in Nashville for singing about same-sex relationships, pot and poking fun at the mobile home lifestyle. (She also co-wrote the Juliette Barnes jam “Undermine,” from Nashville.) Toss out the novelty banjo songs and Same Trailer Different Park reveals a contemporary southern woman who goes to church regularly but drunk-dials like the rest of us. It’s backloaded with a trio of stunners: “Keep It To Yourself,” about a toxic relationship, the anthem “Follow Your Arrow,” sure to be a rural high school graduation hit and “It Is What It Is,” a wistful acceptance of a breakup. Musgraves is a combat boot to the country establishment; Taylor Swift, all dressed in black.
