Published September 11, 2003.Kate MarkowitzMap of the World (Compass)In-demand backup and harmony singer secretly builds a stash of songs for her own solo breakout: It worked for Sheryl Crow. The start of the story is the same for Kate Markowitz. The result is less sun-drenched California pop than the droning moan that appeals mostly to women and their companions whose hearing is impaired by love. The highlights are “Who Needs the Spring” and a Todd Rundgren cover, “Can We Still Be Friends?” The rest drifts out of mind faster than a pre-season football game. —Doug Taylor
