Mayor Peter Kelly,

My daughter is in your son Blake's class. I didn't think it was a good sign for the public school system when I found out that you were enrolling him in a private school, but I made that choice, too, so I really can't complain.

The thing is, we're not like the other families in that school. I am a fairly successful artist—but I don't make a lot of money. Not only do we not drive an SUV—as most families in our school do—but we don't drive, period. We don't own a house, either.

We live on Memorial Drive. The school is only a few blocks away, but I won't walk there with my child because there are no sidewalks and it is not safe. It's an industrial neighbourhood in between, along Lady Hammond and Windsor—then past the DND housing on Connaught—so we take the bus to school and I walk home to avoid paying more bus fare. I repeat the cycle in the afternoons to pick her up. It takes about an hour each way.

It's bad enough trying to walk through a neighbourhood without sidewalks, but today it was horrendous. I risked my neck every time I had to step into the lane to go around a snowbank. Where there are sidewalks, many of my corporate neighbours—including DND and the Steele car dealership—

don't shovel them. Today, by the time I got home, I was soaked waist-high. I'm a fairly healthy person, but how do others get around on days like this?

Instead of finding ways of bringing more cars onto the peninsula, how about doing something for pedestrians? Building sidewalks would be a start—getting citizens to shovel the ones we've got would help, too.
