To the editor,

I read with interest your editorial on “Closing the Gateway.” I would be fascinated to know the source of your information as many of the details you stated were certainly news to me. Nowhere in our original proposal or in the press release do we make reference to a “pro” Gateway conference. We will be hosting an international conference next year that will examine the issues surrounding the Atlantic Gateway, but the views and arguments presented will almost certainly be split between pro and con.

Your assertion that we are “going intellectually bankrupt” is very insulting. As Academics, all we have is our credibility. I can assure you that no one associated with my Centre would ever compromise that – especially for $165,000. While you are certainly entitled to your opinion regarding the Gateway concept, I would hope that you would base it on correct information.
