Unfortunately, Mike Fleury ("Happy Trails," April 4) seems to have bought HRM's propaganda about the so-called "urban greenway." Or else he wasn't told that the three-metre-wide path will destroy some 86,000 square feet of existing green space, including trees, and cover it all will asphalt, which will then be liberally salted during the icy months of the year. With no curb to contain it, that salt will poison nearby grass and other vegetation, much of it on private property. How can such a plan be called "green"? Add to this the waste of laying down so much new asphalt when clearly HRM can't maintain the asphalt the city already has. The Halifax Urban Greenway Association never envisioned an asphalt roadway being built in its name, and our local MLA openly disbelieves HRM's promise to plow and maintain the roadway year-round. There's nothing green about enlarging HRM's asphalt jungle. Contact us at smaitzen@dal.ca if you want to join us in opposing this madness.
