The Long View

by

Published November 27, 2003.Marty EhrlichThe Long View(Enja/Justin Time)New York-based jazzman and multi-instrumentalist Marty Ehrlich has released a colossal album. The Long View is a piece in six movements, with each section composed for ensembles of various sizes, from string quartet to large jazz. It might sound daunting—and at times it frankly is just that. But there are plenty of whimsical mo- ments and surprises. Perhaps not since Charles Mingus have we seen a jazz composer with such a strong sense of modern classical composition and orchestration. —Dave Hayden
