Mawio'mi

When: July 1-3 2011

“Mawio'mi” is Mi’kmaq for gathering, and that’s exactly what will be happening on the Halifax Common this Canada Day weekend. Last year’s Mawio'mi was a commemoration of Grand Chief Membertou’s baptism 400 years ago, but this time it’s more focused on Mi’kmaq culture, with not as much emphasis on religion. This free event for all will allow visitors to walk through a small community of teepees (which light up at night!), taste Mi’kmaq cuisine, and take in the splendor of traditional dance and story telling. Vendors will be selling their wares and conducting workshops, as native people from all over Canada come to participate in dance and drum competitions. –Colin Chisholm
