Meat Curtains

Flesh-obsessed band is more riot grill than riot grrrl.

With a moniker like Meat Curtains, the feminist question is almost inherent.

“It’s pretty gross,” says drummer Jenna Empey (AKA Ronny Rib Rack). “Our lyrics are pretty disgusting. Hanging out with us quite vivid and gross.”

Inspired by the grotesque, Meat Curtains is comprised of bassist Heather Rappard (Betty Bologna), guitarist Jenny Gillespie (Patti Pisstrami) and singer/guitarist Erin Allen (Molly Meatloaf). Often the band is dubbed post-riot grrrl, though they don’t consider themselves descendents from the movement. The all-female band aspect is a fluke, not necessarily a political statement.

“We’re just people with instruments, just because we’re girls it’s not an inherent feminist agenda. I guess there are certain aspects,” Empey says.

After forming this past July, the band recently released a tape split with Pompoir on Isolated Now Waves and is in the midst of recording for a follow-up cassette on Ontario’s Scotch Tapes. Keep your curtains open.
