Montreal’s Barn Burner ride into town on a wave of sick riffage for the Pop Explosion, and they guarantee you will be pulled into their undertow (October 20 at Gus’ Pub with PIG, Straight Reads the Line and Architects. 9:30pm, $8/$10). Kevin Keegan (guitar, vocals) paints a rather atmospheric picture into the thought process that produces their 70s and 80s inspired metal. “The tunes always start with a ruling riff. The riff is like a seedling, if you water it consistently and shed some sunlight on it, it will grow to be a mighty oak to reign over all the land. Lyrically, I usually write about stuff that makes me mad, like when my roommate borrows my styling products and takes my copies of Vogue magazine into the bathroom with him. On a more serious note, thematically I like the idea of standing at the brink of world devastation with a brewsky in one hand and a fine maiden in the other. “

Barn Burner are planning to tour the States and Europe in the new year, film a few music videos and re-release their album Bangers worldwide, with extra tracks. The label that will be doing the re-releasing is “top secret” as Marc Doucette (guitar) says, which, really, only adds to the anticipation. And while we anticipate their Halifax arrival, the boys will be rolling our way in their sweet-smelling tour van, listening to grindcore. “I enjoy a 7am grind session on a long boring drive to get the blood flowing,” says Doucette. “Yeah, I'm usually pretty pumped on the early morning grind core sessions as well,” says Keegan. “I also like to pepper in some more grindcore and perhaps, if I'm feeling frisky, some grindcore.”
