This year’s Halifax Pop Explosion had many of us stumbling around the ol’ Marquee again (or was it your first time?), marveling through the partying about how useful a good larger to mid-sized venue is for shows like that, and how nice it would be if it were a permanent thing. The good news is that Greg Clark and Victor Syperek must have heard me mumbling to myself in the bathroom stall about that very thing because the new year will bring with it a newly re-opened Marquee in all its former glory.

"We’ll be opening hopefuly sometime in the early new year,“ says scene OG Greg Clark, co-recipient of Halifax Pop Explosion's inaugural Scene Builder award. Clark will be reprising the same role as he held during the first six years of the Marquee's original opening, “I’ll be in charge of booking and promos. I'm keen to get back into it.”

Instead of a later cabaret licence, the Marquee is waiting for word on a lounge licence, meaning the club will be open until 2am, "We're pretty optimistic about that,” says Clark

“This has been in process for a little bit, I have to give Vic credit, even though he's actually not made a lot of money from the Marquee he still wants to have the place available—he enjoys it and the Pop Explosion certainly reinforced things," says Clark. "I got a lot of comments from people that they missed the place, hopefully they'll show that with their pocketbooks and presence—talk is cheap."

“My main responsibility is to make sure the club stays open,” says Clark. “I think the city definitely needs the club, we might be playing it a bit cautious for a bit at first, anyone we book there will have to have the potential to put people in there. As far as Hell goes we won't be doing shows down there to begin with, but I expect in the near future once we get it up and running we will." There will also be options to rent for promoters and private functions.

Now the question that’s on everyone’s burnt tastebuds: WILL THERE BE MOTHERFUCKING PIZZA? “We suspect pizza will be back,’” says Clark.

SIGH OF RELIEF!
