The space: My favourite place in Halifax is actually in a building on the corner of Oxford and Cork, where my sister has her office [Solterre Design]. It's not actually about the room, it's all the stuff in it. It is one of the first projects I did as manager of Renovators Resource, and it contains stair treads from a house on Young Avenue, old rads from a south end home and windows that came later were from an old barn conversion. The items in the space bring back memories from jobs I did. The whole building is all salvaged—oak flooring, salvaged doors from the infirmary—there are as many salvaged items in that building as building permits permitted.

Key details: I tried to think about what would be my favourite space—it wasn't about the space at all but all of the components that go into the spaces, and that's exactly what our customers are like. People are really into the history of buildings in Halifax, maybe more so than other places. I love the big, dark, stair treads. They remind me of going into that building before we started salvaging. It was a big old house on Young Avenue, and looking around, being in the project and seeing the pieces in situ before they were salvage. So I see the building they came out of, and not the items.
