Oblivion

Tom Cruise does his best WALL-E impression, cleaning up a ravaged Earth while dreaming about love, in the sci-fi blockbuster Oblivion. When aliens invaded 50 years ago, humanity went for a scorched earth approach and nuked their own planet. Now, the survivors live off-world, while engineer Jack Harper (Cruise) stays behind repairing drones and helping suck up what little non-radioactive natural resources are left. In between his daily duties, Harper gathers mementos of Earth that was, while having strange dreams about a woman he's never met. Things, of course, are not what they seem. Morgan Freeman continues to be in everything, here as a surviving human with a certain agenda. Melissa Leo proudly chews some scenery with just her voice as Cruise's supervisor. There's some nice toys on display, and Cruise tries his damnedest, but Oblivion just doesn't offer anything novel enough to sustain interest. —Jacob Boon
