Community Supported Fishery launches fall deliveries

Starting September 30th, Off the Hook CSF---Atlantic Canada’s first Community Supported Fishery---will deliver a weekly catch of fresh, sustainably caught haddock, hake and pollock to subscribing customers in and around the HRM, following up on last year’s successful inaugural season.

The central concept for Off the Hook is subscribers knowing where and how their seafood is caught, to renew the direct connections with local fishing communities and the ocean, as well as giving consumers the chance to get to know the fishers who catch their supper, while the fishers get a fair price for their catch. CSFs are modeled on community supported agriculture programs.

“It’s a short season, only four weeks,” says coordinator Sadie Beaton, who also works at the Ecology Action Centre. “Until the weather starts to turn.” She says in late November they’ll likely be doing some special deals for lobster season, too, but it won’t be a CSF endeavour. For the CSF they try and keep the numbers of subscribers at around 100 to keep it manageable, with the plan that over the winter they’ll reassess and figure out to to pair a larger number of fishers with more subscribers in the future.
