Oh! The power! | Opinion | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

To the editor,

My family and I used to enjoy the October street party and were sorry to see it end when liquor and stupidity took over. It would be great if it could be re-introduced as the wholesome event it originally was. However, if you are going to promote its resurrection (Oct 13, "Trick or street"), please avoid calling it Mardi Gras. Hello! Mardi Gras is based on the Tuesday (Mardi) celebration prior to Ash Wednesday and Lent! Wrong religious holiday! Wrong month! Wrong reason! People outside of Halifax who heard of "Mardi Gras" in October used to wonder how ignorant we were. Just because some misinformed people foolishly started misnaming the October costume party is no reason for anyone to follow that path like lemmings. Let's correct past mistakes past and call Halloween (All Hallow's Evening—the day before All Saints Day!) by its proper name. You folks in the media have power for good and bad. Use the power responsibly.
