Olympus Has Fallen

Rated R (MPAA) 120 min. 2013

The White House is being held hostage, so it's up to ex-Secret Service agent Gerard Butler to save the day in the aggressively stupid Olympus Has Fallen. Donning balaclavas, stealing airplanes and using suicide bombers, the North Korean military unit invading Washington are the ultimate form of evil terrorists. They even shoot a puppy as part of their plan to blow up America's nuclear weapons by torturing the President's child. Sadly for audiences, Butler's blunt object action hero is little more than meat to hang gunfights off of. Training Day director Antoine Fuqua slums it hard directing this hot mess. Die Hard in the White House isn't the worst idea for a movie (it would have made for a better Die Hard 5), but the blistering idiocy with which Olympus Has Fallen tackles its own plot leaves little room for anything resembling entertainment. —Jacob Boon
