On Canvas: Art for the Planet

When: Feb. 8-27 2010

The Ecology Action Centre partners up with local artists this month to put on an environmentally minded fundraiser at FRED. Wendy MacGregor, who's been working on EAC fundraising events for the past 15 years, says this is the first time the organization's been able to give back to its supporting artists, as over the years local artists have wanted to donate but simply couldn't financially. When MacGregor sent out an email to see if there was interest for a show that would split proceeds 50/50 with artists and the organization, 90 percent of those emailed responded with a "Yes" in less than 24 hours. Among the artists participating are Renee Forestall, Anna Syperek, Marilyn McEvoy, Jeremy Vaughan, Margot Metcalfe---the list counts up to 30. "They've come out even bigger and stronger than we anticipated," says MacGregor, who adds that she's really happy to be able to celebrate the artists. At this point, she says, the feeling is that recognizing artists who want to support the EAC is more important than the fundraising. "Even if we lose money, we will have celebrated the artists," she says, but it doesn't look like that's a concern---so many people have expressed interest that the gallery should be buzzing. A free opening reception takes place Mon Feb 27, 7-9pm, and the closing gala is Sat Feb 27, 8-10pm ($10), with music by Ryan MacGrath. –Holly Gordon
