Darrold Gould
Executive director, Bide Awhile Animal Shelter
With the SPCA, Bide Awhile is among the biggest animal shelters in HRM. “We’re so over-inundated with the big picture,” says Gould (pictured, with Spartacus), “we can use all the help we can get. How I look at is, if there’s 30 shelters out there, good, we need it; I’m turning away 30 or 40 animals a day, there’s no room for them.” Asked what other organizations people might want to support, Gould brings up the greyhound and lab rescue organizations. “They’re good groups that care about those species. Yes, I’d recommend them.” The greyhound group has placed several thousand dogs in the Atlantic provinces.

How to give: Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada (gpac.ca) is in need of volunteers, homes and money. Bide Awhile’s open house is on Sunday from 1-4pm at 67 Neptune Crescent in Darmouth.
