Mint Records is the little engine that could. More than 10 years in the game and still it continues to put out the sweetest of charm-infused pop. P:ano’s sound harks back to the Winnipeg label’s salad days of Cub and seven-inch singles. Brigadoon is the band’s third album but its first on Mint records. There are obvious influences: The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds), Magnetic Fields and orch-pop. The pop comparisons: The Polyphonic Spree and Belle and Sebastian (there is in fact a very Scottish feel to this band). All of this and the music still manages to feel organic and fresh. It’s a tasteful mix of quirky instrumentation mixed with savoury boy/ girl vocals. And filmmakers take note: give these folks a try rather than more Shins.
