What happened to wallpaper?

What we remember as wallpaper is a thing of the past, thank god! What we are seeing now is known as wall covering. With all the colours, textures and patterns available, there is something for everyone's style, and budget. The wall coverings are made from products such as laminate, vinyl, fabric, cork, grass cloth and even aluminum, therefore making them thicker and more durable than the traditional paper.

What should I consider before wall covering?

Remember wall coverings are used as accents and are meant to add colour, drama, interest and texture to your space. There are no set rules; You can put it in a small powder room or a very large living room. The style, size and colours of a room is how you determine what pattern you select and where you are going to use it.

I'm afraid of choosing something too busy, what types of rooms are best suited for patterned papers?

If you're afraid of choosing something to overwhelming your best bet is to stick with a neutral colour, allowing you to go with a more elaborate pattern. When choosing a covering you don't want to put a large pattern on a really small wall that is really broken up with windows or doorways, also the covering is most likely going to be the focal point of the room so make sure it's being applied to the best viewed area from either the entry or seating area. If there is no obvious focal point, pick an area that will best suit the pattern.

What are some other ways to accent a room?

You can pretty much put wall coverings wherever you can think of, from under glass on a coffee table to a nice surprise on the interior shelves or drawers of your vanity. Wall coverings on ceilings are becoming more popular as people start becoming more comfortable with using them, we are currently putting a beautiful covering on a condo lobby ceiling! Remember, wall coverings are supposed to be fun so don't be afraid to be bold and take risks.

What are some tips on DIY application and removal?

Wall coverings are actually very easy to install it just take time and patience to get the pattern match right. Most wall coverings today are not pre-pasted and you buy the glue separate. You can get this at most hardware and paint stores. The glue goes on the wall with a paint brush and then the covering gets applied, this gives you more working time to adjust your pattern match as it must be perfect in order to achieve that seamless look.

Because wall coverings generally are installed with glue, they come off easy. So easy you might even be able to take your covering with you when you move so you can re-use it in your new space. When in doubt ask a professional wall coverings can be expensive and it's better to be safe than sorry. If you're not the DIY type most retailers can offer you an installer to take care of it for you.
