May 24 Weekend, Theatre

Peter Pan

When: April 13-May 30 2010

In a world where it seems childhood grows shorter by the minute, it’s heartwarming to know that it’s still possible for kids to be truly transported by theatre. Neptune’s stunningly staged Peter Pan has the audience (young and old) willing to believe in fairies. This is a production that pulls out all the stops when it comes to elaborate sets (from nursery to pirate ship), stunning costumes (the little girl in front of me whispered, “Mummy, Tiger Lily is sooo beautiful”) and glorious, high-energy song and dance numbers (Hook’s “thinking tango” is worth the price of admission alone). Stephen Roberts makes the perfect Peter Pan with his awesome acrobatics and adolescent brashness. Blair Irwin’s Wendy is a lovely mix of child and woman. But it is Keith Savage as Captain Hook who truly steals the show. He was for me the quintessential Hook, and a campy vision in crushed velvet. —Kate Watson
