Planting Seeds

Seeds Gallery and Shop

Last fall some artistic buds fell into place, as NSCAD's student and alumni shop Seeds Gallery (1892 Hollis) opened its doors. This summer benchmarks the first floral season the artsy boutique/gallery space is opened knowing it's in it for the year long haul. In the past the seasonal Summer Student Store set up for the sunny months of the year and shut down just as soon as back to school was underway. Both funded and founded by the student union (SUNSCAD), Seeds Gallery showcases emerging artists and faculty.

"SUNSCAD spent a year fundraising for renovations and start-up costs. I became part of the project when renovations were underway," says manager Jennifer Simaitis. "My tasks involved getting the word out to students, alumni and the Halifax art community about the new gallery; organizing the physical space and administrative side."

Currently there is wide range of original artwork including, jewellery, textiles, paintings, ceramics, giftware, t-shirts, cards and more. It's important that Seeds represents all of the diverse areas of study at NSCAD.

"The space has always been called the Seeds Building because it was the original location of Halifax Seed," she says. "The name stuck and made sense. Seeds is always rotating artwork to keep the shop fresh. There is something for everyone here, price points range from $2.00 - $2000.00." For further information check out Seeds Gallery
