Pop: Halifax versus Montreal | Cultural Festivals | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

I’m already so broke that the only cheese I eat is at gallery openings or my roommate’s, but unlike Alison I’m in impeccable health and have already got myself on a schedule of going to bed at 4 AM. I was just in Montreal for the Pop Montreal festival and found the experience of attending a music festival with bike-friendly friends while 1100 kilometres away from my own bike frustrating, so I’m excited to celebrate with my bicycle here, as soon as it gets repaired following a bit of a bus incident over the weekend. Plus, it’s still warmer here than Montreal was three weeks ago, but I’ll have to settle for Just Us! coffee from my kitchen, instead of going to Olimpico, the cafe I’ll leave Halifax for.

I’m excited for pretty much everything happening at the Marquee tomorrow night, Spiral Beach and the I <3 Music showcase at Coconut Grove on Thursday, Laura Borealis (only because I wish I’d thought of that name first) and the Hilotrons on Friday, and pretty much every show on Saturday, especially Basia Bulat, who has the sweetest voice both singing and talking. I’m undecided about whether I’ll opt for Monotonix or The Inbreds on Wednesday, we’ll see where I can get in, but maybe Monotonix will break a window at Gus’s and I’ll climb in through there.

I’m also excited that ex-Haligonian bands Horses and Special Noise are both returning, and disappointed that Special Noise’s single appearance will be while I’m hawking zines at the Halifax Zine and Record Fair on Saturday afternoon. But you should head over there, right after you come buy some comics!
