Rogue Wave
10: 1 EP
(Sub pop)
Rogue Wave’s 2003 gem Out of the Shadow (an album that criminally slipped under the radar) was a delightful mixture of indie-guitar bliss and crafted melodies from the hands of control freak/multi-talented (potential) genius Zach Rogue. With expectations set on high for the band’s follow-up (set for late September), it is hard to gauge what that album will be like based on this EP alone. The only track slated for the full-length is “10:1,” a lacklustre song that sounds tossed off. But it is the other three non-album numbers that really grab the ear and make the EP a worthwhile purchase. The Simon-esque “Wait For It” and “Illustrations” are especially wonderful understated melodic gems that conjure up memories of Elliott Smith.
