- Welcome to the east, Samantha Savage Smith.
Samantha Savage Smith is very lost when we catch her on the phone. She and her band are getting back on track after a wrong turn somewhere between Montreal and New Brunswick led them astray. But when it comes to her debut release, Smith's totally on course. The Calgary native has been hard at it on a six-week tour of Canada promoting her acclaimed, powerhouse of a first record Tough Cookie, released by Arts & Crafts last fall. But a career in music wasn't necessarily always the plan for Smith, who's been writing music in some capacity since her teens. "When we recorded the album, even then it was just something for fun," says Smith, whose style is a marriage of jazz, blues and indie rock influences, frosted with an distinctive set of pipes. "But it was a realization that I could do it." Her first visit to Nova Scotia finds her at the CoHo on Friday night.
