Dear Lezlie Lowe,
The assumption behind your “Holiday dispirit” rant (Feb. 26, Lowedown) seems to be that the only legitimate mid-winter holiday is Christmas and its boundaries are clearly delineated within Christian tradition, to be followed by all citizens of HRM.
Surely you don’t believe Jesus invented evergreen trees or wreaths, candles and gifts...or even elves?
To those who follow him, Jesus’ birth symbolizes light coming into the world---which is why they celebrate it mid-winter (superseding established festivals), because no one knows his real birthday! This isn’t an esoteric secret: Just google “Jesus birthday.”
Try to refrain from encouraging citizen-warriors on such ill-informed crusades---and have a happy chocolate-Easter-bunny-egg hunt! ---Marguerite Sands, Halifax
