She Wants Revenge

She Wants Revenge is more music to file under the current post-punk revival. SWR takes on early New Order, Closer-era Joy Division and Depeche Mode while mixing in goth-driven misery. End-to-end the record is monotonous, but the music is both well-written and executed. The vibe is boorish and seems like a bit of a joke. That said, there are positive glimpses throughout that fans of the influences will like. The opener “Red Flags and Long Nights” is pure Joy Division/New Order in all its self-hating glory. Those who liked Depeche Mode’s darker music will be happy that the groove and boring loathing of Martin Gore is still alive and well.
