The son of the late Waylon Jennings already had a go at rejecting country for rock. Now a fiddle and pedal steel hold their own with twin guitars. When Jennings does Dire Straits’ “Walk of Life,” it has renewed energy and sonic depth. Of his originals, “Old Friend,” stands out. Waylon composed a song with similar title but different words 30 years ago. Shooter’s bandmates contribute a few tunes, including “Higher,” a rambunctious look at how musicians cope with the demands on their brains and bodies. Considering his voice seems fried, Jennings is a captivating singer, giving the outlaw sound a bop on the nose and a new suit of clothes.
