Sleep Country cozies up on Spring Garden

Mattresses downtown, what an idea!

Breaking the business park trend that most mattress stores follow, Sleep Country opened its HRM flagship store (and the first in Nova Scotia) at 5415 Spring Garden Road yesterday.

Though the nearly 20-year-old chain, started in Vancouver by Christine Magee and partners, plans to open four other stores in the province (in Bayers Lake, Bedford, Dartmouth and New Minas) within the next two months, a downtown location took precedence.

“The downtown of Halifax is very vibrant,” says Magee. “You have retailers, restaurants, the new library...for our flagship store, it’s important to be present downtown.”

She says Sleep Country came to be because, well, mattress buying is damn hard. “One of the things we really wanted to do was create a business designed to address the customers' needs,” says Magee. “Twenty years ago we thought to open a business to try to demystify the process. We realize its one of the few categories in retail where you can really rely on the sales person to help you.”

Along with delivering, Sleep Country also focuses on properly laying your discarded mattresses to rest, giving the gently-used ones new homes through charity donation, and properly recycling those destined for the garbage. Sleep Country's working on finding a local partner for said recycling, but for now the bed bits are sent to Quebec for the proper, eco-friendly treatment. Halifax, let's get on this! Think of all the curbside mattresses!
