Keto is supposed to be good for your brain and all but did our ancestors ever...uh, try toast? Toast is certainly worth being slower on the uptake, plus you can top it with all of that good fat people always talk about and it's like having the best of both worlds. It's a really great conveyance method for avocado (sliced or smashed or covered in salt) and butter (coconut or cow or peanut or almond) and eggs (poached or scrambled or fried). Deliberately not making a millennial avocado toast real estate joke here because it's like beating a dead horse at this point. Here is a short and not exhaustive list of some wonderful toasts you can buy right now, in this city. These toasts haven't been turned into Airbnbs (yet)!
1. Seven Bays (2019 Gottingen Street) serves a vegan avocado toast that would make my stepdad go "Pffft" but what the heck is his problem anyway? It's got frigging delicious mashed avocado, roasted chickpeas, cashew lime cream and radish sprouts. They will win him over when they make a Coors Light toast, I'm sure.
2. Dilly Dally Eats (6100 Quinpool Road) also serves a stunningly beautiful avocado toast that decorates hefty hunks of that good, green fat with tomato jam, pickles, radishes, sprouts and greens. The gorgeous edible art that can also come topped bacon or an egg, or if you're looking for something more substantial, go for the smoked salmon scramble.
3. And here you thought avocado toast was a luxury item! Parisian-inspired dining room Bistro Le Coq (1584 Argyle Street) takes its golden brioche to the next level by pairing it with a very spreadable serving of both foie gras mousse and house-made compote.
4. Cafe Good Luck (145 Portland Street) always has at least one savoury and sweet toast on its ever-changing menu. The cafe's ricotta toast nails the very east coast cheese/jam combination with housemade brioche topped with ricotta, a seasonal jam (currently it's raspberry cardamom), some fruit and edible flowers. Also the cinnamon sugar toast is always on the menu.
5. You're a purist, you're a bit fancy and you're also not super-hungry? Try the mini-baguette with butter, jam and (yeah you did) quark at Norbert's Good Food (1209 Marginal Road). Easy to eat with a latte, and doesn't break the brunch bank at $5.50. You have eggs at home, goddamn it.
