Stacey Ho, Lindsey Nolan, Eleanor King, Vanessa Rieger and Kevin Hainey, Robbie Shedden: Hidden Windows
Lindsey Nolan
When: Thu., May 27, 6-7:30 p.m. 2010
Taking a few minutes to talk over the phone about Hidden Windows while making her way to Halifax for Obey, artist Stacey Ho finds a quiet place to explain the exhibition's inspiration. "The show takes its name from Kevin and Vanessa's piece," she begins, saying that Kevin Hainey and Vanessa Rieger recorded a single-channel video piece made up of edited webcam footage from all over the world, "creating a collage of moments" from the hidden webcam windows over the internet. "Each little camera peers into the lives and lost moments of other people," says Ho. She thought that feeling translated to art-making in general, in the way that artists find special hidden things in every day life. Ho will be showing some of her sound art, which includes recorded interviews with family members who talk about her late grandmother's life; speakers will be set up on a staircase, with each speaker representing a recorded voice. Look for closed-eye polaroids from Rob Shedden, record sleeve art by Eleanor King, Palimpsest Magazine's zine and drawings by Lindsey Nolan to accompany some of Ho's soundscapes. You can meet the artists at the opening reception on Thursday, May 27, from 6-7:30pm. –Holly Gordon
