From the moment it went viral, Rehtaeh Parsons' story has lodged itself into the hearts and minds of more than just our own community as these particular stories of bullying, harassment and sexual violence begin to seem common place and we all struggle to understand how many times and ways society can fail this same way. "I think we need to be kinder to each other," says Chris Smith of The Pavilion Youth Association, "both in person and online. Treat people with respect even when it's difficult." Smith felt that the Pavilion was uniquely situated as an all-ages venue and youth hub to reach out about bullying in memory of Rehtaeh. "We felt that it would be appropriate to host an event to let those affected by this tragedy gather, talk about Rehtaeh and comfort each other," he says. Bands Gloryhound and Billie Dre and The Poor Boys donated their time and all funds raised will go to the SPCA as the family's requested. "It is often difficult to stand up to a mob of people to protect someone who is being bullied, slandered or abused in this way," says Smith. "You have to be strong."
