The forest fire that started in Linda Mosher’s district did most of its damage in Stephen Adams’ district---it ripped through Fergusons Cove, causing widespread evacuation and panic and destroying eight homes. Unfortunately, Adams was out of town when it hit. Whether his absence was associated with his day job as a pharmaceutical sales rep, I don’t know. But he immediately headed home and became part of the non-stop emergency response, and by all accounts, admirably so.

That’s sort of the deal with Adams: You want to criticize him for something, and he proves you wrong. He’s out of town too much, tied down in his day job, but he doesn’t often miss council meetings and can pull through when the emergency hits.

Likewise, he seems distant from the day-to-day goings on at City Hall, but Adams just landed one of the biggest district coups in recent city history---he convinced both the city bureaucracy and the rest of council to fund a rural bus to Sambro, completely outside of council procedures and in a way that was incompatible with the five-year transit plan council spent a year developing.

The bus will start running this fall.

I still don’t know how Adams did it---maybe he’s got pictures of other councillors in compromising positions. But securing the Sambro bus is an object lesson in how a talented councillor can work for his district. Other councillors, take note!
