Stephen Kelly: WaveUp

When: Aug. 28-Jan. 9 2011

You’re convinced the air, lighting, noise, co-workers are all bad for you. You’re cut off from the world, especially the natural. This moving (physically and emotionally) sound installation connects “urban Halifax and the remote North Atlantic Ocean” via a real-time internet connection, explains artist Stephen Kelly. The gallery installation translates into motion and sound-wave data it receives from Fisheries and Oceans Canada buoys. Natural cycles, such as tidal rise and fall, are recorded. But, he adds, “looking and listening closely reveals a system in constant motion [but] that never repeats itself. I’m interested in the idea that these environments are complex to the point of being completely unknowable.” –Sean Flinn
